INTRODUCTION
***********************************************************************

On July 10th 1943 The Allies set foot apon the continent for the
first time since the evacuation of Greece. For the next two years the
unfortunate divisions that were based in Italy would be locked in some
of the most difficult trench-like fighting of the war. They struggled
from a fragile beachead in Scicily to the Po Valley, can you do the
same? You are to lead the Allies from Scicily to the Po river Valley.

INSTALLATION
***********************************************************************
This scenario will NOT work without the MultiPlayer Civilization 2
disk. To install simply:

1: Extract this scenario to Civ2/scenarios/BOOT
after you are finished downloading it.

WHY I MADE THIS SCENARIO
***********************************************************************

I have played many scenarios about WW2, and yet I have yet to see
a good scenario were the main character (the suggested human player)
was actually the Allies. I thought about this and decided that no one
else was going to make a scenario like this, I might as well do it and
do it right.
Another motivation for me creating this scenario is that all of
the WW2 scenarios out there (with a slim yet precious few that dare to
be diffrent) are based on either the ENTIRE European, Pacific, or World
conflict. I must admit my scenario "The New Germany" was just like
this. I wanted to create a scenario that depicted just an area of
conflict. At first I thought about a "Barbarossa" scenario but
concluded that it is just as "bad" as the entire Euro conflict as it is
so vast (and the point that after England is dispatched with the entire
scenario automatically turns to Russia in ALL of the scenarios out
there).
I had to think for awhile to figure out a good scenario for a
2 Civ game with the Allies as the protagonists. You see, I did not
want to have it too early in the war were the Allies lost everything
(Too hard and boring), but I also did not want to have it too late in
the war where the Allies would have overwhelming superiority. I chose
Italy because throughout the entire campaighn the number of divisions
from both sides commited to this battle was roughly equal, the Allies
did not enjoy overwhelming superiority of supplies due to the
preperation for D-Day, and finally because it is a good long campaighn
that leaves room for a tech tree rather then just a "tactical scenario"
that I feard a "D-Day" one would bring about.

OBJECTIVES
***********************************************************************
Ignore city objectives, they are irrelevant. Playing as the Allies if
you want to win you must:

Capture Rome before The end of this scenario for a minor victory

Capture both Rome and Milan by the end of this scenario for a full
victory.

BELIGERANTS
***********************************************************************

GERMANS: Rather than call the Italians + Germans "Axis" I chose
"Germans" because in this scenario Italy surrenders too soon to
really be considered on the same level. I also chose to name this civ
what I did because the German soldiers were the ones that were putting
up the most vicous and heartfelt defence as well as the most commitment.
Germany in this scenario is on the defence for a change. They
also actually enjoy an ADVANTAGE in total troops and in COST OF UNITS
because I wanted to simulate the strain of D-Day on the Allied Italian
campaighn. Some of Germany's units cost as much as half as much as
the Allies do! This should provide an interesting challenge for the
Allied player.
The only thing that is a serious disadvantage for Germany is that
the Allies enjoy a slight Air Superiority at first wich progressivly
strengthens and strenghthens until near the end of the scenario at which
time the Allies might outnumber the Germans 3 or 4 to 1 depending on how
you manage your industry. Germany has no bombers by the way, the
Lufftwaffe is restricted to a few planes that would be best used to
intercept Allied bombers before they reach their target.

ALLIES: The protagonist of this scenario, it is your job to liberate a
contenent starting from the "soft underbelly"! The Allies start the
scenario out with a few cities in North Africa and also with Malta.
You start off with alot of units in landing craft ready to invade
Scicily. **IMPORTANT** UNLESS YOU ARE PLAYING MULTI-PLAYER you MUST
play as the Allies because the AI will NOT be capable of taking all of
Scicily with a major amphibious operation.
As the Allies you will enjoy numerical superiority in the air, and
in the sea. Unfortunately for you, on land you will have to fight it
out with a most formidable enemy! As the Allies you will have to fight
your way past 4 count em, 4 major defensive lines of the Axis that
continue one after the other, after the other. I highly suggest not
throwing your infantry up against them one time after the other, after
the other.
Your army consists of many infantry units, and a few tank units
that are useful up until the Germans get the Tiger unit, and from there
onward their usefullness takes a plummet. Your job will not be easy.

TECHNOLOGIES
***********************************************************************

Due to the fact that this scenario is so incredibaly short, I have
elected to not have a reasearchable tech tree but rather to give certain
technologies to the players when certain units really became available
in real life.

UNITS
***********************************************************************

1: Egineers. This unit is a purely Axis unit that has the functions of
a settler unit but NOT the regular egineer.

2: Sea Bees. The Allied egineer. Represents the egineers in the
Allied armies which were called "sea bees". Has same functions as the
standard engineer (is faster at things than German counterpart).

3: Bersagliere. Italian heavy infantry. They represent the elite of
the Italian Armed forces.

4: US Infantry. The grunt of the US army, he has a faster movement rate
then his British counterpart.

5: UK Infantry. In more aboundant numbers but much less powerful, the
British infantry's speed reflects on how their commanding officers used
them during World War 2; slowly.

6: BAR Infantry. Stands for Browning Automatic Rifle infantry, these
troops are more powerful than the regular US and UK infantry reflecting
on it's superior weaponry.

7: Airborne. The Allied paratroops. They might be useful for bypassing
German positions.

8: Italian Infantry. Standard Italian units during the second world
war. Less powerful than the US and UK infantry.

9: Facist Italians. The "diehard" Nazis in the Italian armed forces,
strictly German.

10: Partisans. Annoying units that pop up after cities are taken so as
to slow the advancing army to an even greater extent. Destroy these
before they take out the transportation.

11: SS Stormtruppen. The Heavy infantry of the Third Reich. This
infantry represents all the Elite Waffen SS groups as well as
panzergrenadiers and other heavy German infantry.

12: Big Red 1. This is a US heavy infantry that models the 1st US
division which fought in Italy during WW2. In real life this division
became a mixing pot of nationalities which included Americans, Poles,
South Africans, Indians etc.

13: US Marines. The Elite of the US armed forces, use these fellows
to storm ashore beaches.

14: Fallschirm. German Paratroopers, a tough unit to knock out.

15: M13/40. This is one of two Italian tanks featured in the game,
not a very good unit and only there for the sake of actually having
ITALIAN units in an ITALIAN scenario.

16: M14/41. A slightly better Italian tank.

17: Pz IVG. The worst German tank, good for attacking most infantry
though.

18: Pz IVH. An improved model of the IVG, use this in the same way
however as it is not extremely good at knocking out heavy tanks.
Against light tanks, by all meens try it out.

19: Panther A. A good tank with good speed, firepower etc. you wont
be using them for long though.

20: Panther D. An improved version of the Panther A, this is your
best all around tank combining good speed with good firepower.

21: Tiger. Immediatly available and immediatly useful, this is the
Germans second best tank. Use it against anything. Very slow though.

22: King Tiger. The Best tank unit in the game, this unit can take
out anything. It featured an 88mm gun which was capable of piercing
the armor of a battleship if given the chance (no, you can't do that
in this scenario).

23: Stu IIIG. A mobile assault gun, this is cheaper to buy then
most tanks because in the real war manufactories found it much less
complicated to make (buy in civ2 terms) than regular tanks because it
did not have a rotable gun turret.

24: 37mm AT gun. With a total defence of 12 (vs. units x2), this is
a most effecient unit to use a defensive weapon. I highly recomend
using aircraft to take these out.

25: 75mm gun. A field gun capable of attacking most infantry units
with good succes.

26: 105mm gun. A better gun than the 75mm.

27: 155mm gun. Use this against anything period. It is the best
artillery in the game.

28: Me 109G. The most highly produced aircraft of any nation during
the entire war, this unit is the backbone of the Luftwaffe. It's
short range is depicted by it having a lesser movement rate which
restricts it to a mainly defensive posture.

29: FW 190. This is the attack plane that you will want to use as the
Axis. It has better stats than the 109.

30: P-47. This is the main Allied plane. It bore the brunt of the
fight until the P-51 showed up. Because it was not able to stick
with the bombers all the way and back to a target, this aircraft can
only use it's movement points over 1 turn.

31: Spitfire. The standard British Fighter. Not a bad plane and very
good at attacking enemy fighters. Short range however.

32: P-51 Mustang. This is probably the best fighter in the game pound
for pound. In real life this plane made all the diffrence in the air
war as it could stay with the bombers all the way to the farthest of
targets and back. This is demonstrated by it being able to move over
the course of FOUR turns (1,2 attack, 3,4, return in theory).

33: B-24. The best Allied bomber, it goes far and fast. Use it against
far away targets such as northern cities.

34: B-17. Another good bomber but with slightly less range then the
B-24. Use it against anything (except of course fighters).

35: Lancaster. The best British bomber, not as good of a range as the
American bombers but still a highly proficient bomber.

36: Halifax. This plane does not have the range of the Lancaster and
for this reason will be used primarily as a ground attack bomber. It
is perfectly capable of attacking just about anything so long as enemy
fighters are not nearby.

37: Crusader. A light, fast, British tank. Save your money for the
larger and better American tanks. More or less in this scenario for
historical accuracy's sake other than anything else.

38: Escort Class. This unit is basically all the small ships such as
destroyers and PT Boats. Used mainly in hunting down U-Boats.

39: Cruiser Class. A larger class of vessel then the Escort Class.
Slightly more powerful.

40: Cruiser. Not to be mistaken for the ship, this is a light tank
used by the Allies.

41: Battleship. No explanation neccesarry.

42: U-Boat. Submarine, only Germany can builed them.

43: Churchill. This is a medium sized Allied tank, they are not very
good at attacking fortafied positions however.

44: Landing Craft. These troop transports cost a ton of money because
it is ment to reflect the dificulty that Alexander had in requisitioning
troop transports due to the immement invasion of Normandy.

45: Sherman. The famous Sherman tank, I could not create a scenario
without them in it. This model is equipped with the 75mm gun that
Patton recieved during the Scicilian campaighn and so they should be
able to shoot it out with some of the lighter Axis tanks.

46: M26 Pershing. The best Allied tank in the scenario, capable of
shooting it out with the best of the German tanks allthough it will
probably be destroyed should the King Tiger attack it first.

47: MC 202. This is an Italian airplane. I put it in the scenario
simply for accuracy's sake. Not to good, but likewise not to bad.

48: ME 262. The best plane in the game belongs (surprize surprize) to
the Germans. It can knock out any Allied plane but it has a major
downside. Its range is only 6 tiles which meens the max that it can
go to attack a bomber and make it back is 2 tiles.

49: G. Infantry. Germany's most common infantry, but not their best.
Use this rather than Italian troops though, it fairs much better.

50: Light Fort. This is the best defensive unit capable of being built.
This units main purpose is to depict how difficult the struggle up the
deadly boot was. They are quite numerous.

51: Heavy Fort. Better stats than the light fort. For the same purpose.

52, 52, 54, 55: Gustav, Bernhard, Barbara, and Caesar Lines. These were
Kesselring's idea to slow or even stop the Allied advance on Rome.
They are placed where they really were in real life.

56: US Ranger. The elite of the US army. These units can paradrop,
amphibious assault, ignore zones of control etc. very useful for
behind the lines operations.

57: Patton. The General himself! Very good unit, treats all squares as
a road bringing his total movement up to 9! This is because of his
reputation as the Allied Blitzkrieger.

58: Montgomerey. Ya, he is in it too. Very slow movement though!

59: N. Zealand. In it for historical accuracy (New Zealanders played
a significant part in this campaighn).

60: Indian. The brave troops of the Indian division (not Native
Americans, but rather those who inhabit the Indian Subcontinent).

61: MG Nest. In this scenario to help make the scenario even more
difficult for the player.

62: Polish Troops. In the scenario for a cool event and for historical
accuracy.

WHY I PUT THINGS WERE I PUT 'EM
***********************************************************************

In this section I will explain exactly my thoughts on why I made
changes to terrain at certain places, why there are only railroads in
certain places, and other various tibits that you might be curious
about. If you have any further questions feel free to email me at
JPski7@aol.com

*I put up extra mountain ranges in Scicily in the center of the island
so that the human player will be forced to go around the sides one way
or the other (if you are striving for History have the Brits up the East
side, the Americans advancing West.

*I have the German units cost less then the Allied (in some cases)
because I wanted to frusterate the Allied player like the Generals in
charge of Italy were by not allowing them enough supplies (due to D-Day)
to "get the job over with" quickly.

*I have the Bombers and P-51 go 4 turns because I want them to:
A: Be able to reach far away targets.
B: Be intercepted before they can reach the target by German fighters
thus adding a new feature to this scenario.

*I have the British Infantry go considerably slower than the Americans
because:
A: It is a well noted fact that Montgomerey was a slow poke in almost
all of the campaigns that he fought in compared to the American
commanders.
B: To throw in alittle historical context in the actual game.

*There are railroads from Messina to Tarranto etc. because once Scicily
was conquered the southern "half" of the boot was liberated fairly
quickly and without major fighting. It is basically for historical
content and because the scenario is short enough for you to need to
bother with fighting up that part of the map. The real challenge will
come once you reach Salerno.

*There are railroads from southern Scicily to Palermo because I wanted
to show Patton's advance (fairly quick) by going the "long way."

*I have the Lighthouse and Magellan's Expidition renamed as Tarranto and
Naples harbor because these were very important harbors to the Allies
for capture and basically the naval units speed increase is justified by
the fact that with Harbors like these, more supplies could pour in
faster.

*The Germans have no bombers simply because there is not enough room
for all the units that I wanted and I figured that they did not really
play too large of a factor in the Italian Campaighn other then
attacking the Italian fleet as it sailed to Malta and since the Italian
navy is NOT featured in this scenario, I saw no need.

*The Italian Navy is not featured in this scenario because it surrenderd
far to early in the scenario in real life to play an important factor.

*City Walls have been changed to "Tank Ditches" because I thought that
it would be a fun idea to implement city walls as only affecting tanks
because when you think about it, infantry are the only good units for
street fighting and since attacking a city is as close as you can get
to street fighting I thought that by making all infantry ignore city
walls (tank ditches) it would make the scenario more original.

*The Germans have considerable units stationed on the border of Greece
because at the time of the Italian invasion they had many powerful
units there due to their thinking that the Allies were really planning
an invasion of Greece. They also have powerful units in Sardinia for
the same purpose.

*I have Allied foritfications near Salerno and Anzio at the start of the
scenario in order to "protect" events files. In other words they are
there so that Allied troops can always invade at that certain spot.
They also do a good job of drawing German troops to these areas which
makes the road much more difficult for the allied player.

Thanks first and foremost to those who sat through hours of grueling
playtesting to work out the kinks of this scenario! They are:

Andrew Hoekzema

*Thanks to Dan Meadow (DMeadow@aol.com) for your good ideas and
support of this scenario.

Without all of you guy's help, this scenario would quite frankly, stink.

were erased. There is nothing more that I can do to remedy this other
than giving a list of each unit and the initials originally on it. I
hope that you all will forgive me for this inconvinience!
